Nordic Edge Turns Google NexusOne, Windows Mobile and Jave ME phones into Security Devices
Swedish firm Nordic Edge has developed a mobile client, Pledge, which turns phones like Google Nexus One and Windows Mobile mobiles into a security token. Pledge generates one time passwords for two-factor authentication on the phone, and allows users to use the device to log in securely to local networks, cloud services or Internet banks.
Pledge is also available for phones supporting Java Micro Edition.
The company's aim, by enabling the use of the mobile phone as a security token, is to reduce the cost of operations for service providers like banks and IT department by allowing them to issue software tokens instead of hardware tokens. Also, this creates a secure channel for the end users by giving them an easy way to login securely with a device that they always carry with them.
Per the release from Nordic Edge, the client software can handle multiple, simultaneous logins on different servers. So a user needs only one client on the phone even if she needs to log on to several connections at the same time. Pledge comes with a signing functionality, so the phone can be used for example to sign inquiries from a customer service, to sign transactions, or for bid at an auction.
“We are managing more and more of our lives through our mobile phones, and these devices are now ideally suited for providing a secure and user friendly security solution. So we believe there is a great market potential in Pledge,” said Jim Carlsson, CEO Nordic Edge. Nordic Edge was founded 2001 in Sweden and has customers in more than 25 countries.
