VM6 Extends Internal Cloud Offerings with VMex Enterprise Edition
VM6 Software, a provider of software solutions to extend the benefits of virtualisation to Remote Office and Branch Office locations (ROBO) has released VM6 VMex Enterprise Edition. VM6 says VMex leverages Microsoft Hyper-V to create an internal cloud to provision, consolidate, manage and protect all of the ROBO workloads without the costs and complexity of traditional solutions. Therefore, installation and maintenance requires Microsoft Certified System Engineers specialized personnel. With the single console to manage the entire enterprise, or each site individually, administrators have the ability to easily manage up to 65,000 distributed objects.

VM6 VMex is a solution aimed at providing Virtualisation (Server and Desktop), Shared Storage (Virtual SAN) as well as High Availability (HA) & failover in a single and simple software package. It requires 2 standard x86 servers with Microsoft Windows Server 2008(R). Since everything is integrated into the VM6 VMex solution there is no particular need for external storage (SAN), third party software for replication, High Availability (HA), VDI broker, management and so on. VM6 says VMex is a quick to set-up (15 minutes) and simple to manage, with a very low footprint and dramatically reduced power consumption. VM6 VMex is expected to provide 70% lower TCO over 3 years when compared to alternative approaches. Additionally, VM6 VMex provides a centralized management interface that can be accessed remotely to monitor, alert and orchestrate your distributed virtualised environment.

VMex Features

Features of the new release include:
  • Scale: VM6 VMex Enterprise Edition includes a telecommunication function to supports an unlimited number of sites. Also, VM6 VMex is meant to enable the local infrastructure to scale up to 32 nodes and supports unlimited Virtual Shared Storage in each site
  • Embedded VDI: the releas sports embedded virtual desktop infrastructure brokering (VDI) designed specifically for the needs of remote or branch offices, which is meant to remove the dependency on wide area networks, (optimized for low bandwidth and high latency), allows for a portfolio of desktop and virtualized servers, and reduces resource utilization as it doesn’t require expensive shared storage
  • Enterprise IT Management Console: the release includes monitoring and alerting features including default monitoring and recovery plans. With the intuitive dashboard and centralized event logs, administrators can get a consolidated health assessment of the entire enterprise. VM6 VMex can also be configured so that alerts can trigger external commands or Power Shell scripts
Claude Goudreault, Founder and CEO of VM6 Software said, "With VM6 VMex Enterprise Edition, enterprise IT leaders have a single solution for managing, provisioning, consolidating, and protecting their distributed servers and desktop environment across all of their locations for a fraction of the cost associated with traditional solutions."

The key to aligning the IT objectives with the business objectives is a structured approach. Come hear about new ways to develop the required capabilities and prioritize the initiatives to create a Business and SOA transformation roadmap.
Software + Services: Fundamental Shifts in Platform Computing We are at the cusp of a big industry change. The way software is delivered and monetized is undergoing a fundamental shift. The multiple models for monetization are fundamentally shifting the software industry and business models. Traditionally software companies have made monies only in Licensing and now there are three additional models to monetize. In this talk recorded at Saltmarch Media's Business Technology Summit 2008, Srikanth Karnakota says software licensing is going to continue to exist and grow. Online advertising will grow. Online transactions and subscriptions will grow. But perhaps most importantly for a number of our partners, the amount of value that will be delivered by humans providing customization services, application development services, management services, hosting services, will also continue to grow, and so we see a big opportunity for our partners as we make this transformation to Windows and Windows Live and the new software plus service user interface and computing model.

Is TelePresence the Green Product of the Century? Jeanne Lim Explains Companies are fast realizing that being clean and green is good for business. Turning green is not cheap, however, and customers often do not want to pay extra for green technology. Devmarch spoke to Tandberg's APAC Marketing director Jeanne Lim to understand more about how video conferencing is green, if TelePresence is indeed the green product of the century, and how the total cost of ownership of green IT implementations justifies a larger initial investment in exchange for savings down the road.
