Top 10 SOA Trends for 2010

A recent study, comprising small companies and global corporations with over 20,000 employees, found that more than two thirds of them expect to be using SOA by the mid-2010 while 60% of those currently using it are expanding their usage.

According to the study almost a quarter of current SOA users said the concept had delivered most of the benefits they had anticipated, while 36% said the software architecture had delivered enough to justify further adoption. Only 1% said they had seen little or no benefit. The study was conducted by Forrester Research.

Keeping the above mentioned points in mind, let us take a look at where SOA is heading in 2010 and what trends will see widespread usage amongst enterprises:

Increased Governance: with companies around the world slowly recovering from the recession there will be an increase in the importance given to SOA governance tools to monitor maintenance costs to keep a general overview

BPM and SOA integration: Business Process Management (BPM) as a process has always focused more on implementing the capabilities of an organization and SOA focuses on providing those solutions with a structure that integrates the enterprise. Increased knowledge of these complementary processes will result in a tricky integration of the two.

Cloud and SOA: interchangeable terms – a datacenter built on SOA principles. That is how a cloud can be defined in SOA terms. As Steven Martin, Senior Director for Developer Platform Technology at Microsoft puts it, "The cloud is a logical hosting environment for services. Service orientation is a way to build applications, whereas 'cloud' refers to the infrastructure as well as the delivery model for that application."

New Entrepreneurs using SOA: With the onset of cloud computing many new startups will rise with SOA as the base for their service delivery model to deploy applications off the cloud.

Securing the Cloud the SOA way: most of 2010 will be spent trying to secure the cloud and implementing SOA governance tools will help tie up loose ends.

Using SOA for Service Delivery: SOA will finally be adopted as a process to enable service delivery rather than application development. There is a solid understanding of how to develop excellent component-based solutions and being successful with that architecture, but not getting the real intent behind SOA.

Increased investments: accelerated funding will help build stronger and reliant SOA testing and quality assurance tools to improve overall quality of SOA based solutions.

Migration to Product-based Development Model: a move from the project-based developmental model to a product-based development model will boost the use of SOA. In the latter, a product cycles through several versions until that service is taken out of production unlike working on one project and then move to another one.

Enterprise cum SOA Architect: the converging roles of an enterprise architect and an SOA architect will see higher precedence in 2010 as SOA is seen as the best practice in architecture.

Thus, SOA in 2010 will be seen as means to modernize a business rather than just a technology.

Technology is the most trusted sector in India at 88%, followed by banks, automotive (79%), pharmaceuticals (75%), healthcare (73%), entertainment (70%) and media at a relatively low 58%.
